Somniloquy. The tremendous amount of work and love and sweat and tears certainly inspired feelings of endless intangibility; as though I was indeed talking in my sleep. Undergoing a recording project has been a longtime dream of mine and I could not be more proud of the music that is represented here. This album is comprised of works that, to my knowledge, have not been recorded prior to this moment. That was a thrilling proposition to consider – that of creating a “definitive” recording of a piece. Especially the works that are brand new.

Throughout the album, the listener will find some very traditional elements and some very decidedly not so traditional elements. The works are all over the board stylistically and very representative of not only my personal tastes but of a view of modern solo trombone literature in the new century. Every one of these works should be important new additions to the solo trombone catalog and I am honored to present them all to you. Please enjoy!

“With 'Somniloquy', Matt Hoormann has taken the next step in expanding the canon of solo literature for the bass trombone. Several pieces here were composed specifically for Dr. Hoormann, reminding this writer of the invaluable commissions made by the late great William F. Cramer from the 1970's and '80's, including the Serocki Sonatina and the Sulek Sonata. Expertly recorded and performed, this collection will undoubtedly be of great interest to students and pedagogues alike, as we in the low brass family forge ahead in this new millennium. Bravo to all!”

- Scott Whitfield, Los Angeles trombonist and composer
