He has had the opportunity to perform with notable artists and ensembles including Doc Severinsen, the San Diego Symphony Pops Orchestra, Boston Brass, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and the Jazz St. Louis Big Band, and remains active today as a freelance trombonist throughout the St. Louis region, performing with ensembles including the Metropolitan Orchestra of St. Louis, St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bach Society of St. Louis. His performances have taken him throughout the United States as well as to England and France.
Dr. Hoormann currently serves on the music faculties at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Missouri Valley College, and Webster University. At SIUE, he teaches private trombone lessons and Class Applied Brass, and directs the University Band, Trombone Ensemble, and the Meridian Brass Quintet. He reinstated the Brass Quintet and Trombone Ensemble, developed the annual SIUE Brass Day to support the community and further the university's mission, and now serves as the department's Music Recruiting Coordinator.
Dr. Hoormann released his debut solo album, Somniloquy, in 2019. Matt is an Endorsing Artist for Best American Craftsman (BAC) and King/Conn trombones, and a signature artist for Warburton Mouthpieces, for whom he developed his own signature bass trombone mouthpiece. He is also a member of the International Trombone Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the American Federation of Musicians (Local 2-197).
He is currently developing The Modular Trombonist, a pedagogy text for collegiate and adult brass players built around a framework for designing and adapting your own practice routines rather than blindly following someone else's.
"I have had the good fortune of knowing and working with Matthew Hoormann in many educational and performance situations. Not only is his playing top-notch, but his interaction with students is superb. He gets his points across very effectively and with positive energy and enthusiasm."
